Overview

Pacific Type

A self-initiated display typeface inspired by 1970s Southern California beach signage, Pacific is a chunky rounded sans built for warmth and presence. I designed the full character set, drew the specimen system, and released it as a free download.

Typography

Retro “PACIFIC” display poster with bold oversized typography in coral and blue on a textured beige background, styled with minimalist paper elements and “DISPLAY 2024” text.

Details

Pacific started as a folder of phone photos — laundromat lettering, taco truck signs, abandoned cinema marquees — that I'd been collecting on walks for years. I drew the typeface in Glyphs over six months, paying attention to the way SoCal hand-painted signage rounds its corners and squishes its proportions, the warmth of those decisions baked into the bones. The release specimen covered every weight and language, and the free download hit eight thousand designers in its first month.
